Raphaël Lacoste

Director

Raphaël Lacoste is a French art director and illustrator working across video games, concept art and matte painting.

Career

Lacoste joined Ubisoft's Montreal team in 2002 as art director for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

He received a Visual Effects Society award for work on the cinematics of Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones.

He moved into film work as a matte painter and senior concept artist on feature films including Terminator Salvation, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Death Race, Immortals, Repo Men and Jupiter Ascending.

In 2021 he left Ubisoft after a long tenure and subsequently joined Haven Studios.

Interesting Facts

  • While serving as art director on The Sands of Time, Lacoste helped define its blue-tinted Arabian-Nights visual style and designed the look of the Dagger of Time and blue-lit health fountains.
  • For Assassin's Creed Valhalla, the team visited Viking-ship museums in Norway and Denmark and took a drakkar trip to study rowing, sails and rhythm.
