Ken Sugimori is a Japanese video-game designer and illustrator, and a founding member of GAME FREAK Inc.

Career

Sugimori was part of the Game Freak group that transitioned from a gaming fanzine into a video-game company in the late 1980s.

GAME FREAK Inc. was established on April 26, 1989, with Sugimori among its founding members.

Sugimori directed and contributed game design to Pulseman, released in 1994.

Sugimori was responsible for official character design on Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green.

Sugimori directed Drill Dozer, released in 2005.

Interesting Facts

  • Sugimori says he came up with Clefairy during the original Pokémon design process.
  • Sugimori organized an internal preference survey during Pokémon development, and Pikachu was the clear winner.
