Long after a virus wiped out humanity, the knowledge of the human race lives on in a civilization of androids who inherited the earth. Guided by the legacy of Athena, the first android to awaken, these machines built the city of New Jerusalem and set themselves a goal: to grow their population to exactly one thousand. The story begins as the thousandth android, known simply as 1k, is activated and welcomed as the fulfillment of that long-standing goal. During the celebration, a ghostly projection of a figure named Prometheus warns of new trials ahead, and distant sensors detect a massive surge of energy far from the city. Free of the political disagreements dividing the androids, 1k joins an expedition to investigate, uncovering a vast pyramid-like megastructure whose physics-defying technologies confront the androids with unsettling questions about consciousness, knowledge, and their own future.
